Sports Injuries

A wide variety of sports-related injuries can result from trauma, repetitive strain and/or biomechanical problems. At Westside, after the assessment, we use stretching and strengthening techniques as part of a customized treatment program. A sports physician consultation may be suggested if further medical investigation is necessary.

  • Assessment: Our therapists will complete a detailed evaluation of the injured tissues and biomechanics including assessing footwear or previous training methods.
  • Treatment: Sports injury treatments will often involve manual therapy, including joint mobilization, soft tissue stretching, and/or massage. Core and shoulder stability programs may be used to provide a strong foundation. Techniques such as bracing, taping, and orthotics may be used to help gain motion or offer joint stability. Clients can be guided from the initial acute injury through to return to sport.
  • Education: Home exercise programs will be prescribed to complement in-clinic treatment.
  • Pain-reducing Modalities: This includes the use of electrical equipment such as ultrasound, laser, Trancutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TNS), interferential current and muscle stimulators. These are medical devices used to increase circulation and reduce pain and swelling. At our clinic, this type of treatment is used strictly as an adjunct to other therapies, most commonly during the acute (early) phase of an injury.
